About the event
In this workshop you get to escape the world and not think about anything other than the wood you are holding, an ancient wooden stress reliever, where the act of shaping becomes a form of relaxation in itself. During the shaping process we learn to open ourselves up and listen to the energy that each piece of wood possesses. There is much to learn from Kikezuri and workshop leader Gavin encourage everyone try it to create a small heirloom for yourself or others to hold.
“Each tree contains wood with different characteristics and energy”
Kikezuri is a style of Japanese “wood shaping” in which small sculptures and forms are created with knives and files for the simple purpose of making something you can keep in your pocket or hold in your hand. Wood shaping is different from wood carving in the fact that you are not in charge of deciding the end result, you must listen to the wood you are holding in your hands and allow the wood to guide you as you shave it as it is meant to be shaped.
Safe tool handling, reading the wood, form and design, carving and finishing will all be covered in this 3 hour course.
This workshop is suitable for people 13 years and over. Dinner, materials and tools supplied.
The Australian Wood Design Festival is made possible by our community partners.
